About Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill Domain

Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill Domain is a prominent volcanic landmark located in Auckland, New Zealand. It is one of the largest and most culturally important volcanic cones in the Auckland volcanic field, rising approximately 182 meters above sea level. The site holds great significance for Tāmaki Māori, particularly the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Waikato Tainui iwi, as it features the remnants of a large pā (fortified village) on the summit. Historically, the area was a major agricultural and defensive site. Today, the reserve preserves extensive landscapes, including native forest patches, open lawns, and formal gardens, such as the Auckland War Memorial Museum's Wintergardens located nearby. Visitors can explore walking and cycling tracks that wind through the domain’s varied terrain, offering outstanding views of central Auckland, the surrounding suburbs, and Waitematā Harbour. The park is also home to the iconic obelisk atop the summit, a memorial honoring Māori and European settlers. The One Tree Hill Domain functions as a popular recreational area combining natural scenery, historical landmarks, and cultural experiences. It hosts various community events and provides space for picnics, jogging, and casual sports. Ecologically, the domain supports native flora and fauna within an urban environment, contributing to Auckland's green space network. Accessibility from the city center makes it a favored destination for locals and tourists alike.
